Do you recommend covering the outside air conditioning unit in the winter? We live in Michigan and when we had it installed they said not to cover it in the winter, but I notice that it is getting rusty looking.

Check your manual.  Why did they say not to cover it?  If the unit is off for long periods of time, I see no problem with covering it.  Just be sure to remove the cover come spring.  Then check everything on and around the unit.

Most of the time the reason I see peolpe covering them is to keep leaves from gathering in the fall and winter months. With heat pumps you can't do that, only A/C's. There isn't any harm in covering them otherwise.
